Jesus and John Wayne

It's noteworthy that Kristin Kobes Du Mez, an historian intimately acquainted with the evangelical movement, doesn't go with the tried-and-true hypocrisy angle. Instead, she narrates the history of the movement to argue that far from being an aberration, the overwhelming support for DJT before, during, and after the 2016 election was totally predictable. There are lots of counterarguments that could be made, including the fact that the extreme figures she highlights – men like Dobson, LaHaye, and the Falwells – don't speak for everyone who claims (or has claimed) the evangelical label. But she's more right than she's wrong, I'm afraid.
